More Information

Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum

The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is a remarkable archaeological site in Malta, offering a unique insight into a long-lost civilization with its impressive underground burial chambers. The graves are spread across three levels in a complex of about 500 square meters: the upper, middle, and lower levels. The monuments were used between 4000 and 1500 BC and are not only a testament to the advanced construction skills of the time but also an impressive evidence of the complex cultural practices that were practiced there.

History

The history of the hypogeum dates back to 1902 when a stone mason accidentally stumbled upon the monument while working on a new house. At that time, most of the construction work on the buildings above was already completed, leading to irreparable damage to the upper layers of the hypogeum. After the monument was opened to the public in 1903, excavations began and continued until 1911. The finds are impressive: from ceramics to human remains and handcrafted items, they testify to the people who once lived there.

The Site

The architectural design of the hypogeum is evident in the artistically carved cavities, chambers, and passages that were hewn from the soft Globigerina limestone. Particularly spectacular is the lower chamber, which is located 10.6 meters below street level. Remains of burials can still be found in some chambers, and the interesting acoustics of the structure consistently astonish visitors. However, a visit requires prior planning as spaces are limited and often booked weeks or months in advance.

Visiting Options and Costs

The entrance fee for the hypogeum is 35 euros for adults, 20 euros for youths, seniors also pay 20 euros, while children aged 6 to 11 pay 15 euros. For last-minute tickets on-site, 50 euros are charged, as only a limited number of guests are allowed in at once. Strict photography bans are in place, and bringing mobile phones is not permitted to protect the site and make the visit an undisturbed experience.

Travel Options

The hypogeum is located in Raħal Ġdid (Paola), not far from the large port of Valletta. Getting there by bus is very easy; the nearest stop is just a two-minute walk away. Those traveling by car should consider parking availability, as it may be limited.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment – sometimes spaces are booked out for several months.
  • Plan your visit to our current Archaeological Museum in Valletta in advance to learn more about the context of the hypogeum.
  • Wear closed shoes, as some areas are tight and low.
  • There is a list of rules regarding camera use – it is best to leave all devices in the cloakroom and focus entirely on the experience.
  • Be mindful of the timing of the tours. Visits are brief, so it is advisable to arrive at the site beforehand.

Reviews

Visitors to the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum praised the mystical atmosphere of the site. They reported a magical experience that was worth the subsequent wait of months. The guided tours were said to be informative, and it was emphasized how much the dedicated guides love their work. These personal guides helped to bring the stories and heritage of the place to life. However, the high demand for tickets was noted, and many recommended booking long in advance. Some guests were surprised by the strict rules regarding phones and photos, but many observed that these contributed to the preservation of the site.

Overall, the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is regarded as an essential place to visit for any traveler to Malta; it is not only an experience admired for its architecture and history but also a journey back in time deeply rooted in the soul of Malta.
