Tips for a successful road trip
Car rental
It's worth checking the rental car company's insurance conditions in advance: While CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) is usually included in the rental price, it is definitely advisable to also purchase stone chip insurance, especially for a road trip through Iceland.
Weather
Checking the forecast before a vacation is part of it – in Iceland, you should also look at it regularly during your drive. After all, there’s a well-known Icelandic saying: “If you don’t like the weather in Iceland, wait five minutes.” Changeable weather is normal here, so bright sunshine can be followed within minutes by sleet or heavy rain. It’s better to wait a bit before continuing your journey.
Animals
It is normal to encounter animal participants in traffic here on the street: after all, there are more sheep than people in Iceland, and they roam freely in the summer. However, you can also be held up by horses or reindeer, and locals always drive in such a way that they can stop for animals at any time – as a tourist, you should definitely do the same.
Speed Limit
Regarding speed: In Iceland, there is a typical speed limit of 80 km/h on unpaved roads as well as gravel roads and 90 km/h on paved country roads. This speed limit definitely makes sense, as going too fast can easily lead to skidding here.
Gas stations
It's best to use every gas station you see, as they are scarce in rural areas: Even if the tank is still half full, a quick stop to refuel makes sense, because being helpless in solitude is not fulfilling for a vacation...
