On vacation, one loves the regional street food and misses these simple but extremely tasty treats.

Street food has become a trend, so that one can also enjoy these international dishes authentically at markets or events in this country.

What is meant by street food?

Not to be confused with fast food, even though street food can also be enjoyed in between and even while standing: It is usually obtained from stalls or carts operated by small businesses – in some countries, the whole family is often involved. Real street food is freshly prepared and usually quite inexpensive.

Global phenomenon

Street food can be found all over the world, allowing travelers to enjoy the most authentic food at these stalls. Street food is especially typical in the southern states of Asia and Africa: Asian countries like Thailand, Vietnam, or India are famous for their street kitchens, offering delicacies such as tandoori chicken, satay, or pho, a rice noodle soup with beef.

But street food is also very popular and diverse in African cities. While roasted sugar cane is the favorite in Burundi, in the cities of Mozambique and Kenya you can try Prego (steak sandwich) and Mkate mayai (pancakes filled with mint, meat, and boiled eggs). One of the best street food destinations is also Mexico, where street food vendors offer tortillas and sweet treats, such as Mexican rice pudding or churros, fried dough rings.

European Street Food

And also on our continent, the phenomenon has long arrived thanks to migrants who offer cuisine from their home countries: thus, Lebanese, Chinese, and Colombian street food is now prepared very authentically in many places in Europe's street kitchens. In the USA, on the other hand, currywurst is very popular as exotic street food from Germany.
