Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway Reopened
Reservation now mandatory
Once at 4,307 meters: Legendary panoramic road Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway accessible again
Travelers can now look forward to an unforgettable experience at high altitudes: In Colorado, the famous Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway has reopened after a long hiatus. The mountain pass, which is considered the highest paved road in North America, not only entices with spectacular views but also marks a highlight for adventurers and nature enthusiasts in the Rocky Mountains – quite literally.
The most important things at a glance.
- The Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway reaches up to 4,307 meters high.
- The street was closed in the summer of 2025 due to repair work.
- A ticket with a reservation is required and costs 22 US dollars per car.
Record early start to the summer season
Even the drive to the starting point in Idaho Springs promises great things: The Byway winds its way through lush serpentines, dense fir forests, high alpine meadows, and past rushing streams. With each kilometer traveled, flora, climate, and views change dramatically. After about 45 kilometers and 2,100 meters of elevation gain, you reach the parking lot at the end of the road – just a stone's throw from the 4,348-meter high peak of Mount Blue Sky. The air is thin, the light crystal clear, and on a good day, the view extends all the way to Denver and deep into the expanses of Colorado.
On the drive, a fascinating microcosm of the Rocky Mountains unfolds: pikas scurry over the rocks, marmots peek out from their burrows, and with a bit of luck, mountain goats or impressive bighorn sheep can be seen along the route. The contrast between steep rock faces and gentle mountain meadows turns every bend into a little nature cinema.
Access by reservation only.
To ensure the protection of this unique high mountain world, the US government has established strict access rules: Anyone wanting to drive on the road must book a time slot through the official platform recreation.gov. Three-quarters of the tickets are released 30 days in advance, while the last quarter is only available two days prior – so it's particularly beneficial for spontaneous road trips to plan ahead. A ticket per car costs 22 dollars, while motorcycles are slightly cheaper at 17 dollars, and cyclists can pass for free. Without a valid reservation, access is denied.
The opening of the byway marks the end of a months-long closure that was necessary last summer due to extensive repair work. Now the season is officially open – provided the weather cooperates, as snow and storms can lead to short-term closures at this altitude even in June.
A street with history
Already in 1927, the route was established as a path for adventurers and nature lovers.internally located. Due to the high altitude and the partly extreme conditions, the road is mostly accessible only from late May to early September. During this time, the entire high plateau around Mount Blue Sky becomes a mecca for hiking and birdwatching.Inside and photographers. A special highlight: Those who are out early in the morning experience the golden light of the rising sun, which bathes the peaks in a unique play of colors.
"The opening of this stretch is a special event every year," said the Colorado Tourism Office. And indeed, the drive along the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway is more than just a summer outing – it is a change of perspective that leads deep into the hearts of the Rocky Mountains and their protected nature.
What can visitors expect next?
With the opening of the Byway, the season for excursionists, nature enthusiasts, and international travelers also begins. Those wishing to travel this extraordinary road should always keep an eye on the weather report and secure their reservation in time. It remains uncertain how long the route will be accessible this time – as the high mountains follow their own weather calendar.
