Queer meeting place shrinks

Hanlan’s Point Beach, one of the most famous queer beaches in Canada and the oldest officially recognized nude beach in the world, is facing extinction. Located on Toronto Island, this historically significant and popular meeting point for the LGBTQ+ community is nearly at risk of being completely lost due to massive erosion. The call for swift and courageous intervention has grown louder, as already 75 percent of the historic queer area has succumbed to the water in the past decade.

The most important points at a glance

  • Hanlan's Point Beach has existed since 1894 and is considered the oldest still-used nude beach in the world.
  • Erosion was significantly triggered by the construction of the Leslie Street Spit in 1959, which altered the water flows.
  • Since 2021, around 50,000 tons of sand have been added, but the loss of beach area has not been stopped.
  • In May 2026, a part of the beach was closed by the city due to further erosion damage.
  • The city council of Toronto has approved a proposal for a comprehensive coastal protection program starting in 2027, and emergency measures are being called for in the short term.

Unique open space at the edge

Hanlan's Point Beach on Toronto Island is a symbol of openness and vibrancy of the queer scene in North America. Just a ferry ride and a short walk from downtown Toronto, visitors stroll along the so-called "Long Walk to Equality," a 600-meter long rainbow path, directly to the beach where Canada’s first Pride event took place in 1971. In the summer months, Hanlan's Point attracts thousands of people who enjoy the freedom of a protected, inclusive space. However, where just a few years ago wide sandy areas invited people to linger, today there is hardly enough space for two beach towels to be laid out side by side.

David Jubb from the Friends of Hanlan's Association recognizes the ongoing loss of land as a direct consequence of human intervention: "The natural supply of sand has been cut off; for decades, the water has been eroding more of the beach each year." Meanwhile, the founding area of the Canadian Pride Parade is now underwater – historical substance has been irretrievably lost.

City reacts too hesitantly – Community places hope in politics

Although the city of Toronto has made efforts in recent years to mitigate the erosion process through sand replenishment, activists...Insiders demand more consistent measures and increased speed. The closure of the southern section in early summer 2026 further restricts space – especially during the popular Pride Month, more and more visitors are expected.inside on an increasingly smaller beach. Travis Myers, co-initiator of the rescue campaign, describes the drama: "The area is only standing room on weekends."

Deputy Mayor Ausma Malik has set the political ball rolling: Her proposal calls for urgently collecting sand before the large project planned for 2027. However, progress has been slow; according to Hanlan's supporters, there is a lack of clear deadlines and determined enforcement. Especially in light of the immense sums and rapid exceptions that Toronto made possible for stadium projects in the context of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the commitment to preserving a queer cultural heritage appears insufficient.

"It is not just about joy and freedom, but about the preservation of a queer space that could be taken from us time and again," emphasizes Capri Contreras from the community project Lez Beach.

Between history and the future: What's at stake?

Hanlan’s Point Beach is more than a recreational area – it embodies pioneering spirit, emancipation, and the diversity of Toronto. Hardly any other place in North America combines such a tumultuous history with a lived community in the open air. If the erosion protection continues to be addressed slowly, not only is the loss of a beachfront promenade at risk, but also the erasure of queer identity from the urban landscape. The question remains: Will Toronto act in time and save Hanlan’s Point before it disappears forever?
