More Information

Mākena State Park

The Mākena State Park, often simply referred to as Big Beach, is an unspoiled beach paradise on Maui, Hawaii, inviting exploration and relaxation. With its length of nearly two-thirds of a mile and a width of 100 feet, this park offers plenty of space for visitors to enjoy the stunning scenery without feeling overcrowded. Surrounded by dramatic lava rock formations and the shimmering aquamarine waters of the Pacific Ocean, the park is a true gem off the coast of Kihei.

Natural Beauty

The natural beauty of Mākena State Park is unparalleled. The golden sand lining the coast creates a sense of tranquility and seclusion. Particularly impressive is the view from Pu‘u Ola‘i, a cinder cone that provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding coastline and the deep blue waters. The absence of commercial developments adds to the rustic charm of the park, making it a perfect retreat for nature and beach lovers.

Activities

Mākena State Park is excellent for a variety of water activities. During calm sea conditions, swimming is a real pleasure. However, strong currents and high waves can be dangerous for inexperienced swimmers. Body surfing and boogie boarding are also very popular here. Anglers can try their luck with shore fishing along the coast. But caution: Lifeguards are always on duty and their warnings should be heeded!

A Unique Experience

For those seeking more tranquility and seclusion, a small path over the lava rocks leads to Little Beach, a smaller beach known for its 'clothing optional' policies. Here, you can enjoy the sun in a relaxed environment, surrounded by nature and the sound of the waves. It's important to note that there are no restrooms in the park, so you should be well prepared if you plan to stay longer. Don’t forget to bring water and snacks!

Admission Fees and Parking

Admission to Mākena State Park costs $5 per person for non-residents, while residents can enter for free with their ID. Additional fees apply for parking: non-residents must pay $10 for a parking spot. Those willing to pay these small fees will be rewarded with an unforgettable beach experience.

Reviews

Past visitors to Mākena State Park have raved about their experiences. Many praise the breathtaking scenery and the true beauty of the beach, especially at sunrise and sunset. The vastness of the beach is appreciated along with its cleanliness and the opportunity to find a quiet spot to relax. However, some note that the strong waves are not suitable for all swimmers and warn of the potential dangers posed by the current. Despite the park fees, Mākena State Park is for many travelers an unforgettable destination full of natural grace and adventure.
