History

The certificate issued on October 27, 1275, is considered the birth certificate of Amsterdam, relating to the privilege of levying tolls. Thanks to this document, we know that Amsterdam will proudly celebrate its 750th anniversary in 2025, and this should of course be celebrated accordingly.

The official anniversary website states: The establishment and development of the city will be celebrated for a year with numerous festivals, concerts, and informational events "on a grand scale." "The goal: a city that is more vibrant than ever before!" The festival program will highlight the city's journey from a fishing village to a global metropolis, as well as its contemporary cultural, artistic, and social achievements, reflecting the city’s diverse and inclusive spirit.

Highlights

The highlights are to include the tenth edition of the international tall ship meeting Sail Amsterdam in August 2025.

The anniversary year was already inaugurated with a service: In the Basilica of St. Nicholas, Mayor Femke Halsema recalled the mutual willingness to help and religious tolerance that make up "part of our Amsterdam character." In the evening, the celebration continued with a large kickoff party, featuring many popular Dutch stars.
