Security check without airport

Travelers in Boston have recently experienced a completely new airport feeling: Those departing from Framingham can now avoid many stressful moments associated with the traditional airport. Massachusetts has opened its first remote check-in terminal, located 35 kilometers west of the legendary Logan International Airport. For the time being, Delta and Jetblue guests can now check in on the outskirts of the city, go through security away from the hustle and bustle, and enjoy a relaxed bus transfer directly to the gate. This pilot project promises a faster, more tranquil journey and, as the officials hope, could fundamentally change travel for many.

The most important things at a glance

  • The remote terminal is located 35 kilometers outside of Boston in Framingham.
  • After check-in and security control, a bus takes the passengers to Logan Airport.
  • The service costs nine US dollars per ride and is currently available for Delta and JetBlue flights.
  • The parking fees in Framingham are seven dollars per day, while at Logan Airport they are at least 30 dollars.
  • The remote check-in is unique in this form at US airports so far.

Comfortable travel away from the crowds

What does this mean in practice? At Framingham, travelers check in and complete all necessary security procedures before boarding a secured shuttle bus. The bus takes them directly to the gate of Logan Airport, despite the traffic of the US East Coast metropolis. The journey takes about half an hour, depending on traffic conditions. This service offers new freedoms, especially for frequent flyers from the Greater Boston area and business travelers: they not only save time but also avoid the chaos and long lines of the heavily trafficked main terminal. The reservation for the service is available up to 90 minutes before departure, ensuring maximum flexibility.

Parking, Prices, Perspectives

Another strong argument is the price tag: While parking at the central Logan Airport costs at least $30 per day, the location in Framingham charges only seven dollars. This pilot project is specifically aimed at regional travelers, for whom costs are often a decisive factor. However, the new concept is not a free luxury: the shuttle costs $9 per adult one way, with reservations included. Those who find the detour by bus too risky can hope that the next step of the project will expand to include more airlines and time slots. In July, the Massachusetts Port Authority plans to conduct an initial evaluation of the usage and potential improvements to the service.

Sparse backgrounds worldwide

Experiences with external check-in services already exist in metropolitan areas like Seoul or Vienna, where passengers can check in their luggage and check in at the train station. What makes Boston unique, however, is that passengers also go through security checks outside the airport – something that has not been the case even with international pioneers. Comparable test runs for external security processes are currently only happening in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and New York in the USA, but without fully-fledged terminals like in Boston.

Important Questions on the Topic

How secure is the external check-in?Security screening and check-in in Framingham are officially monitored by the U.S. Transportation Security Authority.

Is the offer intended for international flights?Currently, the remote terminal is exclusively aimed at domestic travelers and existing partner airlines.

How far in advance do you need to book?Reservations for a seat on the shuttle bus are possible up to 90 minutes before departure.

Looking ahead

In the summer of 2026, it will be revealed whether Boston's outsourced terminal can truly serve as a blueprint for more relaxed travel in other metropolises. The coming months will determine if more airlines adopt the trend and the concept becomes a new norm for air travel in the USA. Until then, the pilot project remains an exciting experiment that particularly piques the curiosity of regular visitors to the hectic Logan Airport.
