International Spa Etiquette: Diversity in Focus

With the first breath of the warm, fragrant air of a spa, relaxation often begins. However, those who dive into the colorful, global wellness culture quickly realize: spas are as diverse as their host countries. To ensure that the desired break does not turn into a cultural misstep, it is worth taking a look at the nuances of international spa etiquette – and consciously embracing the small art of letting go and asking the right questions.

Worlds Between Well-Being – The Diversity of Spa Culture

The spa culture pulsates worldwide with its own rules and traditions. In Germany and parts of Europe, for example, complete nudity in saunas and thermal baths is part of the etiquette and is an expression of naturalness and respect. In the USA, however, visitors are typically greeted with a discreet bathrobe, while in Finland a Kylvettaja, a professional bath supervisor, may vigorously advise guests to remove their underwear before being gently scrubbed with fragrant birch branches. In the Asian region – for instance, in Hong Kong – it is customary for massage therapists to utilize their entire body, thereby defining personal space more closely than in our countries.

But one thing unites almost all: Those who do not thoroughly shower before their booked treatment risk a polite, sometimes firm reminder. “Before you enjoy our herbal bath, you really must be completely clean. The half-hour stay under the botanical showers is part of the experience here,” reveals Partiti Simon, spa manager at the Ritz-Carlton San Juan. Skipping intense perfumes is also considered courteous internationally – not least out of respect for other guests and one's own senses.

Courage for Clarity – Body Boundaries and Communication

In the spa, well-being is individual – what is pure relaxation for one person can be uncomfortable for another. But how should one behave when the massage feels too firm or the steam room is too hot? Those who remain silent risk ending the day with stiff muscles or even bruises. The key is to clearly express one's own comfort zone. Professionals around the world expect guests to voice their desires to ensure the visit remains pleasurable.

This also applies when certain rituals or touches are unfamiliar: Simply saying "No, thank you" politely is understood almost everywhere. Knowledge of personal and cultural boundaries has long been incorporated into modern spa training, as a recent survey among European wellness facilities shows. At the same time, experts point out that therapists also adhere to clear guidelines – discretion, respect for privacy, and professional behavior are international standards. For unexpected situations, such as an accidental erection during a massage, most staff have routine ways of handling it: ignore it and continue to maintain harmony.

Money, enjoyment, and good manners

Whoever is able should not forget to appreciate the employees – and there are also national differences here. In countries like the USA, the United Kingdom, or the Caribbean islands, tips are firmly rooted in the service mentality and often make up a significant part of the income. It is different in Finland or Japan: there, fees are usually included in the price, and an extra tip is quickly seen as unusual. A quick look at the spa facility's website or a friendly inquiry at the reception can help avoid uncertainties and ensure a successful conclusion to the visit – because, as a well-known saying goes: "When in Rome, do as the Romans do."

Voices from the Wellness World

"International customs often vary significantly. Those who are informed, attentive, and respectful will be warmly welcomed everywhere – and will take the best memories home," emphasizes spa expert Daniela Kollmann from the International Spa Association (ISPA).

The Future of Spa Visits – Open Questions, New Awareness

The global wellness boom is connecting travelers with ever-new facets of ancient bathing and relaxation rituals – from traditional Moroccan hammams to high-tech oases in New York. Digital bookings, customizable treatment packages, and a heightened awareness of hygiene and diversity are shaping the spa experience in 2024 more than ever before. Cultural sensitivity, sustainable product choices, and thoughtfully crafted communication are taking center stage. In modern spas, guests expect offerings that range from vegan treatments to accessibility, setting a new standard for well-being.

Those who heed this small code will find doors opening to oases of peace and relaxation all over the world. More information and current guidelines are provided by the International Spa Association (ISPA), the German Wellness Association, and the World Health Organization for health travels.

Further information is available, for example, from international spa associations and official consumer portals for safe and culturally sensitive travel.
