Michelin Keys 2026: What the Hotel Award Really Means
Keys, Stars, and the Question of Which Hotel Truly Fits Your Trip
Michelin Keys 2026 explained: Criteria, differences from hotel stars, and practical questions for booking a suitable, queer-friendly hotel.
When searching for hotels, not only stars and guest reviews are displayed next to the name of an establishment. One, two, or three Michelin Keys may also appear. The current international selection was published on September 18, 2026. This is an additional orientation for travelers – provided that one does not confuse the award with answers to questions that it does not evaluate at all.
What Michelin Keys are awarded for
Michelin describes the Keys as an award for particularly outstanding stays within its selection of hotels. Five areas are evaluated: architecture and design, quality and consistency of service, the unique character of the property, the relationship between price and experience, and the contribution to the destination experience. Explanation of the criteria comes from the publisher himself.
There are three levels. One key stands for a special stay, two for an extraordinary one, and three for an outstanding experience according to Michelin. It's important to note: a recommendation in the guide and a key award are not the same. A hotel listed there does not automatically have to possess a key.
Why keys cannot replace hotel stars
The classic star classification works with its own criteria catalog for amenities and services. The Hotelstars Union publishes the Criteria 2025 to 2030 Such a classification and the selection decision of a guide answer different questions. Therefore, it is not possible to simply derive three or five hotel stars from three keys.
Continue to check the amenities you really need: such as an elevator, a specific bed, a workspace, or binding information on accessibility. A general rating cannot replace the hotel's specific information about your room. The listed price also deserves a closer look at breakfast, taxes, and possible additional services.
Additional points that queer travelers should clarify.
The five Michelin criteria published are not a separate LGBTIQ+ certification. Therefore, no targeted training on queer hospitality can be derived from a single key. Those seeking proof should inquire with the hotel about its own standards and their practical implementation.
More helpful than a vague assurance can be a specific question: How is a double bed booking for two men handled? How does the team deal with the requested name or a different document specification? Which contact person assists with problems? Formulate only the questions that are relevant to your trip. You do not need to share any unnecessary personal details with the hotel.
How to use the selection for your next booking
Start with the travel destination, location, and budget. When an excellent property is shortlisted, compare the specific room category and booking conditions. A quiet country hotel may be suitable for a retreat, but it could be inconvenient for a city weekend. The award provides a reason to take a closer look; the decision remains tied to your trip.
