Brazilian Metropolises on the Podium for Inclusive Hospitality – a Triumph for Queer Tourism

Travel destinations for diversity and visibility

The sparkling beaches of Rio de Janeiro, the vibrant diversity along the Avenidas of São Paulo, and the laid-back coastal atmosphere of Florianópolis – these three Brazilian cities have recently shared an extraordinary feature: They have been chosen among the top 10 most inclusive LGBTQIAPN+ destinations in the world. For travelers seeking acceptance and safety in their identity, Brazil sets new standards.

With an impressive 892 accommodations, São Paulo ranks third in the current Booking.com rankings, a result that underscores the city's role as a global center for diversity and joie de vivre. The city attracts millions of visitors each year, including for the Pride Parade, which is considered one of the largest and loudest in the world.

Brazil – a pioneer on the map of queer tourism

But even beyond the megacity, openness flourishes: In Florianópolis, there are 691 inclusive overnight accommodations according to the evaluation, while Rio de Janeiro shines as another symbol of acceptance and diversity with 627 certified accommodations. These numbers reflect not only the demand but, above all, the growing awareness in the sector. In an international comparison, three Brazilian cities thus hold their own among major cities like London, Madrid, and Milan.

To meet the increasing number of queer guests, the Brazilian Ministry of Tourism is focusing on targeted awareness. The digital brochure "Bem atender: turistas LGBTQIA+" provides hoteliers, tour guides, and service providers with practical tips for respectful and non-discriminatory interaction – a step aimed at further establishing Brazil's image as a hospitable travel destination. Additionally, in 2024, the national chamber for LGBT businesses and tourism was included in the important Tourism Council to secure sustainable strategies.

Voices for Engagement and Change

"Open doors and hearts not only strengthen the community but also the economy. Every step towards true inclusion makes our cities more unique and attracts people from all over the world." — Maria Eduarda Silveira, activist and hotel operator in São Paulo

Historical development and international perspectives

The recognition of Brazil as a trendsetter for queer tourism is the result of long-standing efforts by social movements and political initiatives for greater equality. The scene at Sugarloaf Mountain has boomed over the past ten years, thanks in part to targeted investments in safety and anti-discrimination efforts. Worldwide, some destinations are now looking to Brazil's best practice models, such as through targeted campaigns and training programs for the tourism industry.

New paths for queer travel

With increasing visibility and societal acceptance, Brazil is establishing itself as a coveted destination for anyone looking to experience authentic diversity and uncomplicated hospitality. The country is setting new standards for global travel norms - and nurturing the hope that more and more cities will follow this example. Will the paradise for queer travelers become even more colorful and open in the future? Optimism is growing - and the door to the world remains wide open.
