Dog owners know the problem: You want to go on vacation for an extended period, but you don't want to leave your beloved four-legged friend alone or in the care of strangers for that long. A cruise, in particular, takes a lot of time, and you want to really enjoy the trip – so what to do with the household dog?

Take along! This is indeed possible, and after all, a boat trip sounds like a lot of fun for a dog: they can enjoy the fresh sea air, there are long walks along the railing, and a nap on the sun deck is something for both the owner and the four-legged friend. So what are the conditions for taking your dog on such a journey?

Provider Check

It is best to inform yourself in advance about the rules. In principle, however, the animal companion must be registered beforehand. The dogs then travel at the owner's own risk. Depending on the provider, route, or ship, the regulations may vary accordingly.

Formalities

Dogs also need specific documents when traveling: For example, those traveling with their dog within the EU need an EU pet passport. The animal must also be equipped with a microchip, and one should carry a vaccination certificate proving a valid rabies vaccination. The ADAC recommends checking the entry requirements for traveling with dogs before a trip to a non-EU country.

Luggage

In the dog travel bag, you should definitely include: food and water bowls, food, treats, a dog blanket, a bed, toys, and plastic bags for dog waste. Additionally, mosquito and tick protection, sunscreen, and possibly a calming agent may be useful depending on the travel destination. You may also want to bring medications, as dogs can get seasick too! But with the right remedies, the nausea will subside, and you can enjoy the sea journey together!
