St. Cosmas and St. Damian
Overview
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Cosmae et Damiani, known as St. Cosmae, is located in the heart of Stade in Lower Saxony. It is a notable landmark of the city and impresses both with its historical significance and its stunning architecture.
History
The oldest verifiable evidence of a chapel in honor of Saints Cosmas and Damian dates back to 1257. The core structure of the current church, built in the brick Gothic style, originates from the second half of the 13th century and has a single-nave structure with a cross-shaped floor plan.
St. Cosmae survived a devastating fire in 1659 that destroyed large parts of the city. The reconstruction of the church in Baroque style produced magnificent elements, including the high altar, the pulpit, and the baptismal font, all of which date back to the 17th century. The impressive octagonal church tower, completed in 1684, still dominates the skyline of Stade.
Architecture
The distinctive octagonal tower of the church rises over 65 meters and is a remarkable feature of the architecture. The interiors are richly decorated in the Baroque style, with particular emphasis on the detailed design of the pulpit and the impressive organ, which was originally built by Berendt Huß and completed by Arp Schnitger.
Visitor Information
St. Cosmae et Damiani is open to visitors and offers the opportunity to climb the tower, which is accessible via 187 steps. At the top, visitors are rewarded with a magnificent view of Stade. A comprehensive written guide can be purchased at the entrance for just one euro.
The church is also the place of numerous cultural events and concerts that take place regularly and provide insights into the musical tradition of the region.
