Between Pescara and Vasto, a piece of the Italian Adriatic coast is currently undergoing a sustainable transformation: The Costa dei Trabocchi has been systematically developed for gentle tourism since 2024. On the once-dilapidated railway line, a spectacular bike route by the sea, the new Via Verde, has been created, leading travelers through historic fishing villages and to nearly forgotten piers. This coastal section is coming into the spotlight, having previously been spared from mass tourism.

The most important things at a glance

  • The Via Verde connects all the main attractions of the Costa dei Trabocchi for the first time over 42 kilometers car-free.
  • Numerous traditional fishing piers, the historical Trabocchi, have been restored and today house restaurants serving regional cuisine.
  • The province of Chieti relies on a sustainable tourism concept with strict environmental regulations for new establishments and gastronomy.
  • Punta Aderci and other natural beaches receive enhanced protection status and are free from rows of sun loungers.
  • The region is investing in barrier-free access and cycling services along the route.

New Via Verde revolutionizes gentle coastal tourism.

The decisive step took place in spring 2024 when the newly asphalted Via Verde was officially opened. According to the regional tourism ministry of Abruzzo, a car-free cycling path was created along the disused railway line, stretching 42 kilometers through the heart of the Costa dei Trabocchi. The project, implemented by the province of Chieti in collaboration with the Italian railway, connects all the main towns and beach sections for the first time. The route passes by Trabocchi piers, gravel beaches, and pristine bays. Additionally, cyclists and walkers will have access to new rest areas, cafés, and bike stations that are open year-round.

Historical fishing piers are becoming gourmet destinations.

For connoisseurs, a whole new perspective on Italy's eastern coast opens up. The fishing piers, the Trabocchi, dating back to the 17th century, have recently undergone extensive renovations and now serve as platforms for seafood restaurants. According to the municipality of San Vito Chietino, several family businesses have been preserved and even new jobs created as a result. On the narrow wooden planks, you float meters above the water, while the crystal-clear Adriatic Sea sparkles beneath you. Reservations for tables in the Trabocchi are now highly sought after. Regional cuisine featuring fish, olive oil, and fresh herbs is the hallmark of the new gastro scene.

Protected Nature and Clear Standards

Not only enjoyment, but also nature conservation is the focus. Large beach areas such as Punta Aderci and Mottagrossa have enjoyed official protected status since April 2024, according to the regional administration. The sale and installation of commercial sun lounger rows as well as motorized access are now prohibited there. In the bays, travelers can enjoy the water without loud music or dense crowds. The "Blue Flag" marks selected bathing areas with demonstrably high water quality.

The next specific project is the expansion of additional barrier-free access points and service stations along the Via Verde. This positions the Costa dei Trabocchi as a rare example of sustainable enjoyment and nature-oriented exploration right on the edge of the Adriatic.
